Pottery Cottage is set amidst the rural landscape of North Cumbria in the beautiful
village
of Skelton which lies on the edge of the Lake District National Park,
about 4 miles from Caldbeck and the Northern
fells.
We feel we are a perfect base from which to explore further afield with the very
popular Lakes town of Keswick only a 30 minutes drive, the unrivaled scenery
of Lake Ullswater lies only 7 miles distant and Ambleside is a stunning drive
of 22 miles along side the lakes of Ullswater and Brotherswater then via via
the famous and spectacular Kirkstone Pass. The Northern Pennines - an area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty - is only a short drive away using the A686 Hartside
Pass route which was voted one of the top ten picturesque routes in the world
in 2001. Slightly further afield Hadrian's Wall is also only a pleasant 45 minutes
drive away as is the Solway Firth and West Cumbrian coastline.
The local market town town of Penrith itself is a wonderful place to stroll around
and explore with a host of specialist, traditional shops, fascinating alleyways
and narrow streets seeped in history. Penrith also boasts the spectacular ruins
of Penrith Castle, historic houses and churches and in between sightseeing and
shopping you can rest a while in one of the many and varied excellent Cafes,
Restaurants or Inns. The town itself boasts a first class leisure centre while
nearby Castle Park offers a great range of outdoor activities such as bowling,
tennis, crazy golf and putting whilst there is an playground and paddling pool
for the younger ones.
The surrounding area is well endowed with visitor attractions such as Eden Ostrich
World, Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre and the Rheged Visitor Centre as well as
a host of castles, historic houses and churches to visit. The Eden and Ullswater
area is rich in crafts with potters, artists and sculptors studios dotted around
in Penrith and many of the outlying villages.
Outdoor Activities

There are literally hundreds of walks in the area to suit all levels of walkers,
from the imposing Helvellyn and Blencathra massifs to more sedate riverside strolls,
town trails or lakeside rambles. There is also ample scope for the more adventurous such
as scrambling along Sharp Edge, bouldering on Carrock Fell and ample opportunities
for climbing both indoors and out.
For those who prefer 4 legs to two there are plenty of pony trekking
opportunities especially around the Ullswater area for both beginners
and experienced riders
alike.
Cyclists are spoiled for choice either on one of many of the off-road
trails in the area, forest track or even a high level traverse of High
Street. For the less adventurous there are miles and miles
of quiet, minor roads for you to explore passing through delightful
villages and maybe enjoying refreshments at one of the many cafes along
the way.
There are both indoor and outdoor swimming pools close by (depending on the weather!)
but should you choose to sit by the waterside instead there is also plenty of
opportunities for fishing either on one of the lakes or rivers as well as coarse
fishing.
Nearby Penrith boasts its own 18 hole course overlooking the town as well as
a modern driving range and municipal 9 hole course on the outskirts of town and
there
is
also an excellent 18 hole course at nearby Threlkeld nr Keswick.
